Ilulissat Icefjord

Where icebergs are born

Sail beneath the cathedrals at Ilulissat.

Ilulissat is a UNESCO World Heritage site for one reason — the Jakobshavn Glacier calves more ice into the sea than anywhere in the northern hemisphere. Ocean Victory anchors in the bay; zodiacs thread the bergs. From there the voyage crosses Davis Strait into Labrador's Torngat Mountains — polar bear country, Inuit homeland, almost nothing else.

Overview

A journey shaped by conditions, not a script.

Adventure Canada's Greenland & Wild Labrador is the operator's signature long-form voyage — a one-way passage that begins at Kangerlussuaq on Greenland's west coast, threads the fjords north to Ilulissat, crosses Davis Strait into Canada, and traces Labrador's mountainous coast south to Newfoundland. Aboard Ocean Victory, the experience is built around onboard programming led by Inuit educators, archaeologists, naturalists, and musicians from both sides of the strait. The route is weather-led. The pace is unhurried. The landings are deliberate.

Zodiac among the calving icebergs of Ilulissat Icefjord (UNESCO).

Cross Davis Strait into the Torngat Mountains National Park — polar bear country.

Cultural programming with Inuit educators from both Greenland and Nunatsiavut.

Trace the Labrador coast through fjords and remote Inuit communities.

Itinerary

Day-by-day route.

  1. Day 1

    Kangerlussuaq, Greenland

Charter flight from Toronto to Kangerlussuaq, on the edge of the Greenland Ice Cap. Embark Ocean Victory and meet the educators sailing with the voyage.

  2. Days 2-4

    Sisimiut and Disko Bay

Sail north along Greenland's west coast — Sisimiut for Inuit cultural visits, then into Disko Bay for the approach to Ilulissat.

  3. Days 5-6

    Ilulissat Icefjord (UNESCO)

Zodiac among the calving icebergs of the Jakobshavn Glacier. Walks ashore along the fjord and visits with the community of Ilulissat.

  4. Days 7-8

    Davis Strait crossing

Two days at sea between Greenland and Canada. Lectures, workshops, and naturalist watches for whales and seabirds on the strait.

  5. Days 9-10

Land in the Torngats — Labrador's polar bear country and the Inuit homeland of Nunatsiavut. Guided by Inuit bear monitors throughout.

  6. Days 11-13

    Labrador coast

Continue south through Labrador's mountainous coast with visits to Hopedale, Nain, and Rigolet — small Inuit communities reachable only by sea.

  7. Days 14-15

    Northern Newfoundland

Cross into Newfoundland waters — a chance to walk L'Anse aux Meadows, the only confirmed Viking landfall in the Americas (UNESCO), conditions permitting.

  8. Days 16-17

    St. John's

Sail down the east coast for arrival in St. John's, Newfoundland, and disembarkation.
